How to build floating kitchen shelves with pipe

What you’ll need

To build floating shelves with a “black iron” finish, you’ll need:

1/2″ Flanges

Amazon

The pieces that connect pipe to wood.

Nipple pipe pieces

Amazon

The short pipe pieces between the flanges and elbows. Get the sizes for your project; this used 2.5″ and 12″.

90 degree elbows

Amazon

The joints.

Drywall Anchors

Amazon

50 pound anchors should be sufficient since you’ll use multiple; the shelves aren’t that large that you’d hang that much combined weight.

Wipe-on polyurethane

Amazon

For the wood finish

Design

The wood is 1″ thick, and the depth is 6″. The outer middle shelves are 28″ long and the center ones are 37″ long. The wood is cut, sanded, and coated with 3 coats of polyurethane.

Piecing everything together is pretty self-explanatory. We tried to hit studs, but it’s sturdy with drywall anchors, and we don’t plan on putting anything too heavy on the shelves.

Chilis, anyone? We’re on the hunt for Trinidad Scorpions, if anyone has a connection. And the BEST chilis we’ve found are Piquins from Penzey’s–smokey with some kick!

Cost

~$140 from Home Depot minus the wood, which was left over from our islands.
